Since
September 1998, Louisiana has required the PRAXIS I and the respective teaching
areas of the PRAXIS II (i.e.: English, Social Studies, Elementary Education)
for certification testing. NTE (National Teachers Exam) scores taken before
September 1998 will be accepted. Some sections of the NTE are still required
for specific subjects taught such as Math. Specific sections of the PRAXIS
II PLT (Principles of Learning and Teaching) are also required depending
on either K-6 or 7-12 grade preparation. Information about The PRAXIS Series tests |
The first certificate which is issued to those applicants finished with in-state teaching preparation programs and to out-of-state applicants meeting the testing requirements is the Type C Initial Certificate. (If out-of-state applicant does not meet testing requirements, then a 1-year nonrenewable provisional certificate will be issued.) After 3 years of teaching and a state assessment, the teacher is eligible for a Type B Permanent Certificate. This certificate is valid for life service as long as the teacher teaches at least 1 semester per 5-year interval. If 5 years pass without any teaching, a renewal process is necessary to reactivate the certificate. This requires 6 semester hours in resident, correspondence, and/or extension credits related to specific teaching field. A Type A Certificate with a Master's Degree is also available for those who qualify for a Type B and have a Master's Degree. The teacher can add areas of administration onto this type of certificate. This certificate has the same type of validity as does the Type B. | Specific parishes/counties have their own substitute programs and policies. |
