Communities
Renee Paruta Slonaker
Curriculum Integration Specialist
Learning about and being
part of a community is the focus of this Integrate project. Students
in grades 1 - 2 participate in activities that integrate Social
Studies, Language Arts, and Science curriculum with technology skills.
In the introductory lesson,
students listen to the story, Disney's Winnie the Pooh: A Bear-y
Good Neighbor. A discussion about neighbors and neighborhoods
and a word-processing activity about addresses follow the story.
Other activities include
map-reading, using an online map and address finder, exploring a
community and creating a collage, building a model community, creating
a BINGO card of community vocabulary words in a spreadsheet, comparing
old community pictures to the current community, creation of a class
"Seeing the Sights" multimedia book, writing a silly street
story, and becoming active in the community.
Technology skills practiced
include inserting lesson vocabulary terms into a spreadsheet, practicing
English skills and inserting and formatting text in a word processing
document, using a browser to navigate to a web site to locate and
read a map, and creating a multimedia presentation to showcase sights
in a community.
Wrap up the unit and
continue the communities theme throughout the school year by becoming
active in a community project like planting flowers and cleaning
up litter.
