Monster Math

Monsters, Wild Things, Crazy Critter — these imaginary creatures are the subject of many primary level books and are favorites among early grade students. This week's Integrate project called Monster Math focuses on engaging first and second graders in activities which integrate the math and writing curriculum with technology skills.

Students complete a guided lesson in the computer lab to practice Internet navigation and to access Monster Math problems on an Internet site. After completing the Internet problems, they embark on an activity to create their own Monster Math problems to publish as a class booklet or slide show.

Several technology skills are practiced while students word process their monster problems and complete a cut and paste spreadsheet activity sequencing the steps to follow when solving word problems. Options are also included for drawing a monster using the drawing tools on the computer, compiling a class spreadsheet after voting for the favorite monster problem, and creating a slide by cutting and pasting the word processed text.

These activities support academic standards involving problem solving, data collection, calculation, and basic writing skills.

Celebrate the end of the Math Monster unit by reading Monster stories and eating Cookie Monster treats!
