Winter Holiday Websites

Use these holiday websites as sources for classroom activities. For example, using one or more of the sites with recipes, have the class use MS Excel to create a meal large enough to feed the entire class or to convert metric measurements to standard. Or break students into groups to create their own activities based on the principals of Kwanzaa. For example, students can go out into the school community and create a Umoja (unity) newsletter with articles on community events and classifieds. To demonstrate Ujima (collective work responsibility), students can help clean up the school neighborhoods by picking up litter, washing off graffiti, doing errands for seniors, and so on. Have students create a World Holiday timeline including celebrations all around the world.

Multicultural websites

• The Diversity Calendar View holidays throughout the year from a number of perspectives.
• December Days: Ten Activities to Celebrate a Month of Special Days Interesting activities for ten significant days in the month. (Rosa Parks Day, Beethoven's Birthday, First Day of Winter, and so on.)

Chanukah websites

• Hanukkah: The Festival of Lights Read aloud a simple telling of the Hanukkah story and follow up with a handful of across-the-curriculum activities.
• Hanukkah at Pleasant Grove Elementary School in Georgia. Lesson plans, puzzles, activities, crafts, and recipes.
• Lightspan's HanuKat Activities include a different activity for each night of Chanukah
• AOL's Jewish Holidays includes lesson plans, activities, clip art, and other resources

Kwanzaa websites

• Black Voices — Kwanzaa Includes Kwanzaa greetings, recipes, and background information.
• Official Kwanzaa Website lists the seven principals of Kwanzaa

Christmas websites

• Christmas Tree Facts can be used for a variety of math activities.
• Find out how Merry Christmas is said around the world.
• Christmas Internet Scavenger Hunts Pleasant Grove Elementary has created four scavenger hunts focusing on Christmas around the world.
