Springtime Middle School Challenge
John Navarro

It’s finally springtime and Chris and Alec are ready for a bike ride in the sunny weather! Chris lives on Elm Lane. Alec lives on Walnut Street. Elm and Walnut intersect exactly 5 kilometers from each boys’ house. They decide to leave at exactly 10:00AM. If Chris can bike at 10 km/hr and Alec can bike at 15km/hr. Who is the first boy to arrive and at precisely what time does he get there? How long will this boy be waiting for the second boy to arrive? Draw a map or graph to help visualize this challenge.

Bonus

The following day they decide to go off-road and take the most direct route to meet up with each other. The terrain causes them to lose 2km/hour from their speed. Will they meet up sooner than staying on the road? What time do they meet each other? Show this on your map.
